Major Release: Takedown Scoring and Stats 3.0

Takedown Scoring and Stats release 3.0 is available in the App Store this week. After following this guidance, all users should download this version. Takedown 3.0 requires iOS 12 or higher.

Automatic Data Synchronization

Takedown 3.0 offers an impressive set of new features including automatic data synchronization between multiple iPads. This means that when a team’s iPads are connected to the Internet, all users will see the same data. This new capability replaces the Share Season export/import feature in Takedown version 2.

Associated with this exciting capability, Takedown 3.0 implements a new account creation and login feature. If you’ve previously registered for Takedown LIVE, you can use that email/password combination to login to Takedown. If not, you’ll be prompted to create an account when Takedown 3.0 first launches. Your Takedown login credentials should be securely retained.

Once you’ve logged in and your data has been uploaded to the cloud, any user with your account credentials can log into Takedown on any other compatible iPad. This means, for example, that anyone with an iPad — a parent, for example — can be enlisted to score matches and record video.

It also means that you should exercise caution in giving out your credentials as any mistakes — accidental deletions, for instance — are irreversibly propagated to all iPads.

Takedown still retains its ability to work off-line without an Internet connection.

Flexible Subscription Sharing

Takedown 3.0 greatly improves subscription sharing by allowing any Takedown installation logged in with your Takedown account credentials to use your scoring and video recording subscriptions. Previously, subscriptions were available only on iPads registered to the Apple ID of the original subscription purchaser. This requirement is eliminated with Takedown 3.0.

Unknown Wrestler

The unidentified wrestler problem is elegantly handled in Takedown 3.0 by offering “Unknown Wrestler” as an opponent selection. This capability replaces the current practice of creating “Unknown Team” entries in the Opponent Team list and “Unknown Wrestler” in an Opponent Team roster. Once the wrestler identity is established, you can edit the committed match to change “Unknown Wrestler” to the identified opponent’s team and name.

Practice Attendance

New in Takedown 3.0, this feature captures practice attendance status for each rostered wrestler. Attendance status choices are Present, Absent or Late decorated with Excused or Unexcused. The new Practice Attendance report presents all of this data in an easily digestible format.

Practice weigh in/out is moved to the new Practice Attendance interface which has the dual benefit of simplifying the weight recording workflow and presenting all weight data for a single practice in one view.

More Improvements

  • Single tap Roster and Opponent Team refresh from our online database

  • Tie-breaker detail and winner calculation by criterion

  • Improved Contact management

  • Customizable Equipment list

  • Linking of existing YouTube video to re-scored match

These are all significant improvements to Takedown, especially the data auto-synchronization feature. We look forward to hearing from you about your experience using these new features in the upcoming season.

Version 2.13.3

Details about our latest release of Takedown Scoring and Stats to the App Store.

Takedown Scoring and Stats release 2.13.3 is available for download from the App Store. This release is highly recommended for all users and includes changes and improvements as follows:

  • Bug fixes, internal improvements

  • YouTube-mandated changes to video uploads and privacy policy acceptance

  • Feature retirement: Scoring Graphics

Bug Fixes, Internal Improvements

This release fixes a serious bug that caused video previously uploaded to YouTube to disappear from the Mange Video list. If you are using Takedown’s video feature for uploading to YouTube, it is critical that you install this update before accessing the Manage Video portion of the app.

In addition, we improved our bug diagnostic capability by migrating to a better technology.

YouTube Changes

As a YouTube Developer, we are obligated to implement our YouTube-related features in accordance with certain Google and YouTube terms and conditions, policies and technical limitations. As such, we have made these changes in Takedown:

  • In order to use Takedown’s YouTube features, the user must explicitly accept our Privacy Policy.

  • Automatically created wrestler and event YouTube playlists are no longer available. YouTube does not allow for automatically created playlists at the scale required by our user community. We have tried to work around this limitation without success. YouTube is aware of the issue and we will revisit should YouTube change its policy. Users can still manually create and organize wrestler or event playlists on the YouTube platform.

  • Automatically created YouTube channel sections for each Takedown Season is no longer available. Users can still manually create YouTube channel sections.

  • For each video uploaded to YouTube, the user can optionally specify the video title, video description and privacy setting.

So Long Scoring Graphics

A few years ago we introduced auto-generated, network-delivered, high quality scoring graphics in support of dedicated, stand-alone video production systems. An advanced feature requiring in-depth video production and networking expertise, the Scoring Graphics feature was under-utilized by our users and, at the same time, required significant ongoing engineering investment. We decided to invest in our engineering resources in other capabilities that would be more valuable to our users.

New Release: Takedown LIVE

This week we’ve released new versions of Takedown LIVE for iOS and Android. All users should download.

Takedown LIVE iOS has a significant update to the Scores screen. Now, today’s action — in progress and completed matches — is shown on the Scores screen and results prior to today are accessible via the History selection. Also, we’ve added a user setting for selecting the date range over which historical results are presented. There are a number of presets — last week, last two weeks, last month — along with the ability to select any set of start and end dates. These changes declutter the Scores screen and offer ultimate flexibility in choosing which historical results are displayed.

Takedown LIVE Android’s release improves the Scoring view by including bracket and round information for tournaments as well as competition level — Varsity, Junior Varsity, etc. — for scholastic (non-college) events.

Version 2.13

Better playlist management, YouTube-required consent, bug fixes.

In the app store now. All users should download.

In addition to bug fixes, there is one major feature addition and one YouTube-required consent dialogue.

Better Video Playlist Management

If you’re using Takedown’s video features, you’re most likely aware of YouTube’s daily playlist creation limit which is not published but is very real nonetheless. The daily playlist creation limit seems to be in the 10-25 range though, again, this is an unpublished YouTube limit.

Takedown creates, on your behalf, two types of playlists in your YouTube account: (1) Event Playlists and (2) Wrestler Playlists. These playlists are created during video upload in Manage Video. Since Takedown attempts to create the Event Playlist first, there’s a high probability of success especially if you haven’t uploaded any other events on the same day.

However, large teams attending early season tournaments are likely to hit the daily playlist creation limit as Takedown attempts to create a playlist for each wrestler for whom video has been uploaded. The consequence of hitting this limit is that the wrestler videos are uploaded to your YouTube account, but all of the corresponding Wrestler Playlists might not have been created.

As the season proceeds, each attempt to upload videos and create Wrestler Playlists is more successful and, eventually all Wrestler Playlists are created. However, newly created Wrestler Playlists won’t contain uploaded videos from earlier in the season when creating the Wrestler Playlist failed. These videos exist on your YouTube account, but are “orphaned” with respect to the associated Wrestler Playlist.

The new “Fix Playlists” feature (in Manage Video) attempts to correct the “orphaned” video problem by comparing the video contents of each Wrestler Playlist on YouTube with Takedown’s on-device database of successfully uploaded videos for the wrestler in question. If Takedown determines that there are one or more videos for a wrestler that aren’t in their corresponding YouTube Wrestler Playlist, it will add those videos to the Wrestler Playlist.

Note that “Fix Playlists” doesn’t create new YouTube playlists — it simply attempts to improve the accuracy of existing YouTube playlists.

For information on using Fix Playlists, see our Support article.

YouTube Required Consent

Every thirty days we are required by YouTube to solicit your consent for managing Takedown-created YouTube assets on your behalf. Respond accordingly when you see the consent dialogue in Manage Video.

Video Dooze and Dontz

YouTube is an open platform meaning that you can credential into your YouTube account outside of Takedown and do stuff like upload videos, delete/create playlists, edit videos, add channels and channel sections, etc. Some of this activity will not impact Takedown while certain activities will seriously degrade Takedown’s ability to manage YouTube content on your behalf.

To get the best video experience using Takedown, follow these suggestions.
